Orders and Medals The three orders of the Line, and the citations gazetted by the Ministry to 23 September 2026

The orders

The Order of the Reed, instituted 1812 after the holding of the Reed Line, is the senior decoration of the state. It is awarded for a single act of conspicuous conduct on the causeway and carries the reed in silver on a green ribbon.

The Star of the Wardens, instituted 1813 in the name of the seven Founding Wardens, is awarded for the leadership of men under enemy action. It carries the seven-pointed star of the seal on a white ribbon.

The Line Medal, instituted 1848, is awarded for steadiness on the Line: holding a post, keeping the lanterns, recovering the colours from the water. It is the most widely awarded of the three and carries the causeway in bronze on a ribbon of green and white.

Decorations to men who fall are entered on the casualty rolls and sent to the next of kin. Decorations to serving men are gazetted by the Ministry and reported in the Herald. Since 1811 the rolls carry 1,174 decorations and 214 citations have been gazetted.
