Roles
Line infantry
Hold the posts on the causeway from the Reed Gate to the Far Stakes, in watches of eight hours.
Lanterns and signals
Keep the signal lanterns lit through the fog and pass the evening report back to Marschau.
Boats
Crew the flat boats that supply the posts and recover what goes into the water.
Causeway works
Drive stakes, lay planks and keep twelve kilometres of causeway above the water.
Who can join
Service is governed by The Conscription Act, passed 12 March 1811:
- Every man aged 18 to 40 liable for service in the Marsh Regiments.
- Service is two years, then a reserve obligation to age 50.
- Women admitted from 1972 by amendment.

How to join
Check you are eligible
Read the conditions above. You will need your passport or your entry in the register of persons.
Report to a depot
Go in person to the depot of any Marsh Regiment. You do not need an appointment.
Medical and chronology check
You will be examined and your date of birth checked against the register by the Ministry of Chronology.
Take the oath
You are entered on the strength of your regiment and given your date to report.
